Come in to Balance at Yoga Space of Key West

Yoga Space is a small yoga studio located in the heart of Key West’s historic district.

Our room receives natural light all day through the large front window and several clerestory windows. Our floor, a beautiful, smooth Cuban tile from the 1930′s, slightly cool to the touch, invites practice in this subtropical climate.

The room’s temperature is otherwise regulated by fans and a quiet, ductless air conditioning system. The pale blues of the walls give a sense of calm.

Locals, snowbirds, and tourists alike have been practicing here together here since 2004.

Our staff has more than 126 years of combined yoga experience, and we look forward to welcoming you; be you a beginner or an advanced student.

Yoga Space offers the following classes:

Introduction to Yoga: This is a two month series designed for those people who may never have taken a yoga class and will feel more comfortable entering asana levels 1-2 with some basic knowledge. We begin each class with stretches to warm major muscle groups, and then practice poses with emphasis on alignment, steadiness, and balance. We progress to seated and supine poses, ending with five minutes of relaxation. Props such as blocks, blankets and chairs are kept nearby to appropriately tailor each pose to each person.

Asana: Asana is sometimes translated from the Sanskrit as “comfortable seat.” This meaning is carried through our teaching and is reflected in our practice at Yoga Space. By allowing the body time to adapt to and accept various postures, we are able to experience moments of integrated stillness. Our “class levels” designation indicates the particular complexity of postures to be explored in any given class. The benefit of working this way, in “class levels,” means there will be both a sense of familiarity in practicing what has previously been experienced, and an exploration of related ideas and poses.

Pranayama: Pranayama is the art and science of breath techniques, and is appropriate for those with a steady asana practice of one year or more where inversions and backbends are regularly included. A steadying breath supports a steady, meditative mind.

Restoratives: Restorative postures are designed to cradle the body in comfortable positions for several minutes at a time. Moving slowly and quietly, and resting fully, allows deep seated tensions to un-spool from the body and brain. By inducing this “Relaxation Response”* the nervous system experiences calm. This class is suitable for all levels.

Tibetan Buddhist Meditation and Study Group: This class is designed for the beginner to learn calm abiding meditation and introduce one to the practices of the deity of compassion, Chenrezig, as taught by the very venerable Lama Norlha Rinpoche with personal instruction by Lama Karma Chotso who visits Key West from Miami.

Pilates: These exercises performed on the mat tone the entire body. Pilates is a complimentary activity to yoga because it, as well, develops both strength and endurance.

Yoga Jam: Open to levels 2-4. Be self-led and group energized. There will be music to keep you moving, and a teacher on hand to answer questions and give adjustments, if desired. We close with a guided savasana.
